Chapter 69:

The Cost of Giving Up

SURPRISINGLY, VIOLETTE DIDN’T HAVE an official curfew. That didn’t mean she had plenty of freedom; in fact, it stemmed from a much larger problem. Maryjune and her stepmother were the arbiters of Violette’s curfew, rather than the girl herself or her father. If either of them was worried about Violette, her curfew became a huge issue; if neither one was, she was free to stay out all night long. They might talk badly of her for such tardiness, but they wouldn’t care a lick about her safety. Violette was bitterly aware that none of them held a genuine grain of concern for her. Her heart had already withered so much that such a thought did not wound her.

She no longer experienced surges of emotion or willpower. Even if she was dissatisfied, she had reached the point of letting everything go in one ear and out the other. Whatever she felt, consequences always followed. It was easier to resign herself to being their punching bag. It was hardly healthy to accept such a lot in life, but she never believed a healthy life in this house was possible to begin with.

“I was nervous, but I think I did my very best!” Maryjune said.

“There’s my girl. It was your first test, so I’m sure you were quite nervous,” Auld replied.

Violette had forced herself to become a machine again today, relegating the three smiling people around her to the background. Now she was an automaton unable to move anything but her hands and mouth. Whether her taste buds functioned depended on the day; they were like a roulette that operated outside her control. There were times when she thought the food was delicious, but whenever she tried to blot out her emotions the same food would turn into a tasteless mass of nutrients without fail.

It was truly regrettable, especially considering it had been made to her tastes. As delicious as the meals she ate in her room were, their flavor was influenced by the people around her. She ignored the nauseating discomfort nevertheless and forced her stomach to digest the food if only because the servants had made it for her. She did not savor the bland texture on her tongue, nor the sensation of it going down her throat.

At the same time, she wondered what would happen to her after the results of their exams came out. The mere thought of it made her feel like the weight deep in her gut had multiplied.
